The insurance marketplace for Property and Liability coverage has changed significantly over the past few years and even more so since the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Most traditional carriers for health care facilities have exited the market, and the remaining Assisted Living insurance carriers are increasing premiums dramatically. Increases of 50% to 200% are now standard. As a result, we have recently partnered with a risk-retention group which will offer an alternate insurance mechanism in addition to our standard insurance program.
Although the NYAHSA/Cool insurance program has been in place for many years, we are pleased to announce a new, exclusive program for senior housing. As with the nursing home insurance program, we anticipate the senior housing insurance program to become the marketplace leader in a very short time frame.
The Workers’ Compensation marketplace has also tightened, with carriers limiting many of the discounts allowed in the past. In addition to a fully insured plan, NYAHSA’s Self-Insurance Trust has recently gained great popularity. In fact, the Trust has grown from 11 to 65 members in the past four years.
The Cool/NYAHSA partnership has saved member facilities over $25 million in reduced premiums and dividend payouts during the past 9 years.

NYSHA is an organization in New York State that has over 650 members collaborating together to serve an estimated 500,000 New Yorkers annually. It is an organization of community benefit programs to help provide high quality health care, housing, and community services to the elderly and people with special needs. Members of NYAHSA include nursing homes, adult care facilities, assisted living providers including nursing home insurance providers, continuing care retirement communities, senior housing facilities, home care agencies, adult day care providers, among others.
